Ink and Cracker

Indian Street dogs VarkalaWritten by Maureen Hand

The last few days have been so tragic. Little ‘Ink’ the black puppy went missing for 3 days. I searched high and low for him to find him hiding under a rock. He looked like he hadn’t eaten since the last time I fed him and he was too weak to even hold his head up.

I managed to get some liquid in him via a syringe.I then noticed a car with a family driving very fast down the narrow rd. I then heard a piercing scream only to find they had run over a little puppy ( Cracker) Inks sibling. On inspection the puppy was alive but her back legs had been run over. This was the second time she had been hit by a car. I challenged the driver holding the puppy in my hands. He just laughed in my face and his wife and children shuffled past on the way to a fine dining restaurant.

I asked them for help but they just walked on by. I rang a local vet whom I know and he pretended it was the wrong number. I asked tourists to help me house the puppy until I could get help the following day but no one offered support. This is the true reality of Varkala. One man kindly let me house the puppies in one of our crates outside his house until I could get them to Street Dog watch in Kovalum. This is a five hour round trip by taxi. I was not sure they would make it through the night. To my surprise…they did! Me and two volunteers ( Greg and Carol) got them to street dog watch where they were given medication to ease the pain. The staff at Street Dog Watch were amazing. These people have 85 street dogs living at they’re home. All healthy and friendly. Both Ink and Cracker are now under their watchful care It’s not looking too good but we can only hope and pray they make it. Please send them your blessings.

I have just been informed that both pups Ink and Cracker have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge rest in peace you are both now free from pain xx
