Our Vision

Hundreds of street dogs roam the streets and beach area of Varkala in Kerala, South India. Most don’t live long enough to grow into adulthood. These dogs are more often starving, injured, have skin diseases, infections and are full of worms. They have had no safe place or shelter and some are purely dying from dehydration.

Operation street dogs was established in December 2014.

We began with a handful of western women whom whilst on holiday began to befriend these beautiful dogs in the hope of giving them the basics in life. Food, water and love. At our first meeting, we agreed to try and make a difference for these poor and neglected animals by raising awareness locally and by gaining media coverage. We began feeding and getting these sick and injured dogs for veterinary treatments, including vaccinations, De-worming and sterilisation. with no funding, we paid out from our own pockets but recognized that this was not sustainable.

Our vision is to raise enough funds to establish a rescue and treatment centre in the region of Varkala. This would enable us to provide daily and intensive care for injured and sick dogs, we require veterinary support and the recruitment of ‘Street Dog Angels’ (volunteers) to help us make Varkala a better place for street dogs, working alongside local people, tourist, shop owners and young people, we hope to raise the profile of this cause alongside an education programme.
